Final Project Proposal

Proposed Title: Vein (?)
Response to Reading: Physical/Natural Sciences (Geology)
Concept: Visual representation of natural phenomenon (rock strata/precious metal ore veins)

This final project will be in response to the reading about Physical/Natural Sciences, particularly the section about geological art. Its, not completely, but slightly related to the first group project, where my partner and I also focused on geological art and the natural phenomenon related to the science of geology.

I plan to create a neck piece (of sorts) in the somewhat abstracted form of natural rock strata formations/veins of precious metal ore. This project will represent geological strata through sheet metal, somewhat reflecting on and representing the source of materials (ie. rocks and ores for metals). In a way, this could be considered a representation of an 'earthy' substance (like rock or metal ore) with refined versions of themselves (like shiny sheet metal).

(Preliminary sketches)

The scale of the piece is still to be decided (mostly due to cost related issues...), but it will likely be a fairly large piece of wearable art.

This piece will be formed from sections of sheet copper and red brass (if you must know, specifically a type called 'Dixie Gold', since it has an appearance closer to bronze or... gold, than 'regular' brass does). These sections will then be given different surface treatments to represent the different layers in natural geological strata (such as etchings, liver of sulfur (blackening agent), hammered textures, differing levels of oxidation (other was of blackening metal), etc.) Smaller sections of the red brass will be high polished and tucked under the layers, visually representing a vein of precious metal within the surrounding rock.

(More sketches... sort of looks like coral in this one... whoops)

The sections will then be attached by riveting the layers together, then bent around the neck/hung by a chain (dependent on the final scale of the piece).

Some of the artists that I found interesting when developing the idea for this project were:

Eve Andrée Laramée- created works reflecting on the idea of plate tectonics, geographical boundaries, and other geological phenomenon.

(Eve Andrée Laramée- Eroded Terrain of Memory)

Jorg Lenzingler- created miniature geological formations out of salt crystals.

(Jorg Lenzingler- Blooming Saltgarden)

(Evelyn Rosenberg was also of interest, but mostly because her practice involves metalwork and explosives... using explosives to fuse metal and other elements sounds... interesting to say the least.)
